BECOMING A DEMENTIA FRIEND; Physical Activity, Nutrition and Dementia

I was at a meeting last week with Ospreys Rugby and the Alzheimer’s Society regarding learning more about Dementia and being more aware of the disease and being more patient and understanding with sufferers.

Anybody can be living with Dementia, even as young as in your 40’s or 50’s so it is hugely important that to diminish this risk you eat healthy and keep active, where possible taking up some form of Physical Activity.

When I put it to the chair whether eating certain foods and their said ability to reduce your risks or chances of suffering from Dementia was just a myth, this was swiftly quelled.

If you are physically active and eating a healthy diet then you are halfway to reducing your risks or chances of living with Dementia.

Foods such as Spinach, Kale, Broccoli and other green vegetables, beans and pulses such as Chickpeas, berries and blueberries, nuts, fish, whole grains and low fat dairy are all linked with greatly reducing your risks of living with Dementia.

Evidence shows that a medditerranean diet high in fruit, vegetables and cereals, and low in red meat and sugar reduces your chances of Dementia. It is advised that for a healthier and more prosperous life we should eat this kind of diet anyway. However, not only is cutting down the amount of red meat you eat better for you and your diet but it is also better for the environment and being green, whilst at the same time reducing your chances of living with it.

The lower alcohol you consume, the greater your risks of developing Dementia again as Now studies show that Alcohol can sometimes be linked to Dementia later in life.

For those Athletes or those of us who exercise and abstain for the majority of the time, we are already at an advantage.

The Ospreys themselves are continuing to work out ways in which they can bring awareness to Dementia and ways that they can improve their facilities at the stadium to accommodate people living with Dementia.
